Virginia Tech is the senior land grand institution in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It has the only academic program in forestry and natural resources in the State. The College of Natural Resources and Environment fulfills all three missions of the land grant institution of instruction, extension, and research.
Specialists in the extension program have long been involved with the Virginia Forest Products Association in conducting workshops and short courses as well as helping the membership on a one-on-one basis. Joint publications and computer programs have been produced and made available to the forest products industry.
More recently a close tie has been developed between the industry and Virginia Tech in the area of research. With federal, state, and industry support the faculty and staff have worked on several projects of importance to the industry. These have included residue utilization, automation of edging and cross-cutting, pallet design, recycling, lumber drying, industry noise control, industrial forestry, as well as others.
